The Division of Laboratory Services at the MUSC Medical Center, as well as all laboratories, strive to comply with the medical necessity requirements. One of the most important obligations for the laboratory is to ensure that physicians and clinicians understand what tests they are ordering and to assist them in ordering only those tests that are medically necessary for the diagnosis and treatment of their patients.

Laboratory staff cannot tell the physician / test ordering professional to use a specific diagnosis. Instead, laboratory staff can only help to educate physicians and clinicians as to the appropriateness of a given laboratory test for a specific clinical description.
