HP TCP/IP Printing

If you are unable to print from an application using a queue-based printer, you should use HP TCPIP printing. This printing systems works with all MS-DOS applications.

Allows users to print directly from their computer to a printer without using a server.

Action Steps – Confirming a LPT Port

DOS applications require an LPT port to print to. Before proceeding with the printer installation you must confirm that an LPT port is available.

1.

Click on Start, Settings, then Printers.

Opens the Printers window.

2.

Highlight an installed Printer and hit the right mouse button and select Properties.

Opens the Properties window.

3.

Click on the Details tab.

Opens the Details screen of the Properties window, as shown in screen shot P.3

4.

Click on the pull down tab in the "Print to the Following Port" field.

Displays all of the available ports. LPT1 is a system port and will not be available.

5.

Confirm LPT3-4 are not being used. You need to have 1 free to print in DOS! (If you do not see LPT3-4, it means that they are not being used.)

Confirms that LPT3-4 are not being used.

6.

If LPT3-4 are not being used, click OK to close the Printers window.

Closes the Printers window.

7.

If you see LPT3-4 being used, click on the one that is being used, click on Delete Port to delete the installed LPT3 or LPT4.

Enables LPT3 or LPT4 to be available for HP TCPIP printing.

8.

If you have not already closed the Printers window, click OK to close it now.

Closes the Printers window.

Double-click on the My Computer icon.

Opens the My Computer window.

2.

Double-click on "Install on DS*\Sys(W):" (W:\ drive).

Opens W:\ drive.

3.

Double-click the HP folder.

Opens the HP folder.

4.

Double-click on the Setup TCPIPPort icon.

The print utility setup will begin.

5.

Click Install Network Printer button.

Opens the "Welcome" dialog box, as shown in screen shot P.4

Click the "Specify a Printer by Address". Click Next.

Opens "Identify Printer" dialog box, as shown in screen shot P.5.

Select IP Hostname and type in the NPI #. The NPI # may be labeled on the printer. If not and you have a HPLJ4, skip to step #8 to print the NPI. If you have a HPLJ 4000, HPLJ4050, HPLJ 8000, or HPLJ 8500, skip to step #15 . If you have a HPLJ 1600C, skip to step #22. If you have another type of printer, call the Help Desk at 2-9700 for help in finding the NPI #.

Push the "ONLINE" button on the printer to take it offline.

The red indicator light will go OFF.

9.

Push the "MENU" button down exactly 10 times.

The Test Menu will be displayed on the screen.

Push the "ITEM" button down 1 time.

Self Test will be displayed on the screen.

Push the "Enter" button.

A test page will print out.

12.

Push the "ONLINE" button again.

Red indicator light will come back ON, indicating the Printer is back on-line.

To determine the NPI #, look at the middle of the test middle of the test page in the MIO box. The middle column of that box will have a line names "NODE Name". You should see the number you are looking for (EX: npic42073. If you cannot find the NPI # or it shows up as a queue (EX: zk_hot201_arcs) contact the Help Desk at 2-9700.

Tape the NPI # to the printer in a visible spot. Skip to step #25

Identifies the NPI# for the printer. Continues LPR setup.

 

Finding the NPI# for HPLJ 4000, 4050, 8000, 8500

 

15.

Push the "GO" button on the printer until it says "OFFLINE".

Green indicator light will go OFF.

16.

Push the "MENU" button to the right 1 time.

Information Menu will be displayed on the screen.

17.

Push the "ITEM" button to the right 2 times.

Print Configuration Page will be displayed on the screen.

18.

Push "SELECT".

2 test pages will print out.

19.

Make sure the printer is back on-line. The printer should do this automatically after the test pages print out. (If not, press the "GO" button.)

The green indicator light comes on.

20.

To determine the NPI#, look at the 2nd page. On the left hand side about halfway down you should see "HOST NAME" (EX: npic42073). If you have any trouble finding this number, please call the Help Desk at 2-9700.

Push the blue button on the printer 1 time.

A Printer Test Page will print out. The Printer will set itself back online.

To determine the NPI#, look at the print out, in the middle of the page towards the bottom you will see "NODE NAME" (EX: npi71B801.) If you have any trouble finding this number, please call the Help Desk at 2-9700.

Continue LPT Printer Setup.

If you have not already done so, enter the NPI# in the Host Name Field (EX: NPI086EC).

Enter the NPI number.

Click Next.

Opens Set Print Mode dialog box, as shown in screen shot P.6

Click the drop down arrow for the Print Mode field and select Window TCPIP. Click Next.

Selects Window TCPIP. Opens MS-DOS Printing dialog box, as shown in screen shot P.7.

Select Yes for DOS printing. Select LPT3 or LPT4. (If this option is not available, refer to the instructions for LPT Port Confirmation.) Click Next.

Selects DOS printing for LPT3 or LPT4. Opens Printer Driver dialog box, as shown in screen shot P.8.

Select a driver for your printer. To do this Click on the Have disk button.

Opens the Looks In: window, as shown in screen shot P.9.

Click the button 3 times.

Looks in: My Computer.

Double-click Install on ‘Ds*\Sys:’ (W:).

Opens the W: drive.

Double-click Printer Drivers.

Opens Printer Drivers.

Double-click on your printer.

Opens your printer.

Double-click oemsetup.inf. If you do not see the *.inf file, call the Help Desk at 2-9700.

Selects the appropriate driver for your printer.

35.

Click on the appropriate printer and click Next.

Asks if you would like to to replace the existing driver.

36.

Click Next.

Opens Printer Name dialog box, as shown in screen shot P.10.

37.

Fill in the Printer Name using the geographical naming conventions (BUILDINGROOM-PRINTERTYPE-IP) (EX: MUH367-HP4000TN-IP) Click Next.

Uncheck Print a test page. Click Finish.

Sets up the printer.

39.

Wait until the Install Complete window opens. Click OK.

Confirms the installation of the printer.

40.

Click Exit on the Install Network Printer window.

Exits the HPTCPIP Printer Setup

To confirm the Printer is Setup correctly. Click Start, Settings, Printers.

Opens the Printers window.

Click on the installed printer. Right-click and click Properties.

Opens the Properties window.

41.

Click Print Test Page.

Prints a test page.

42.

If a test page prints, click Yes. If a test page does not printer, Click No and call the Help Desk at 2-9700.

When you click Yes, the HP Setup TCPIP Utility will reappear.

43.

Click OK or Cancel to close the Properties window.

Closes the Properties window.

44.

Close the Printers window.

Closes the Printers window.

Congratulations you have set up your printer!! Don’t forget to tape the NPI# somewhere visible on your printer!!!
